History

presidios and other military establishments formed the basis of Spanish rule in
California for centuries. Under Spanish rule, California was divided into four
military districts: San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey, and San Francisco. Each
district fell under the jurisdiction of a presidio that protected several
missions and vast tracts of land. These military establishments were typically
run by the Catholic Church with the purpose of converting indigenous people to
Catholicism. Furthermore, they served as training grounds for farming, military
skills, and other useful abilities.
Though most Native Americans were forced to assimilate into the missionary
system, some groups managed to preserve their culture and language. These
people were known as Miwoks or Mohave, Chumash, Pomo, and Yuma. After Spanish
rule, the state fell under Mexican control and was dominated by
Californios--Spanish-born men who owned large cattle ranches. They were the
wealthiest and most powerful people in California at this time.

influx of settlers. From just over ten thousand in 1848 to over six million by
1920, its population had tripled.
