Fox Performing Arts Center
The Fox Performing Arts Center is one of Riverside California's crowning
jewels in the cultural landscape. It hosts live concerts and theatrical
productions throughout the year, as well as music festivals. Furthermore, this
multipurpose venue can accommodate corporate events or weddings. This historic
theater, originally built in 1929, is a Spanish Colonial Revival-style building
designed by Los Angeles architects Clifford Balch and engineer Floyd E.
Stanberry - who were responsible for many of the "West Coast Theaters."
Abe and Mike Gore, Adolph Ramish, and Sol Lesser formed West Coast Theaters
with their neighborhood theater chain which they eventually sold to William Fox
of Fox Studios; thus becoming known as Fox West Coast Theaters. In 1939, the Fox Theater in Riverside hosted an exclusive sneak preview of Gone with the
Wind. Film executives and investors drove to see it and were truly astounded by
its quality. In 2010, after an extensive renovation and restoration, the Fox
Theater reopened as part of Riverside's Arts & Culture initiative,
"Riverside Renaissance." Over five years, the city invested $35
million into this endeavor. Nowadays, Live Nation manages the Fox under their
brand name Riverside Live and produces a wide variety of shows and big-ticket
events for audiences in and around Riverside.
Citrus Park
For an enjoyable and educational afternoon, Citrus Park is the ideal
destination. This 250-acre park preserves some of California's rapidly
vanishing cultural landscape of citrus production while telling the tale of how
citrus has shaped its history. In the early 1900s, California experienced a
second Gold Rush as hundreds of potential citrus barons moved here for what has
come to be known as "The Second Gold Rush." Surrounded by lush groves
of oranges, lemons, and grapefruit - California gained another iconic legacy: it
is "The Golden State", synonymous with sunshine and opportunity. Visitors
to the citrus groves can take a FREE guided tour on weekends called "Tours
and Taste." Here, you'll learn all about its history as well as get to
sample fresh fruits picked right off the trees! Thanks to a recently passed
state budget, major improvements are in the works at the park. Money will be
allocated for building structures that tell the tale of citrus' rise from Eliza
Tibbets' original navel orange tree in 1873 and how it helped shape
California's Dream. Furthermore, these new buildings will serve as venues for
educational events and activities to further draw visitors in.
